In the first three days of its release on Friday, May 12, more than 10 million copies of The Legend of Zelda were sold worldwide: Tears of the Kingdom, making it the fastest-selling title in the franchise. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom also became the fastest selling Nintendo Switch game in Europe, and the fastest selling Nintendo game on any console within Europe.

"Even in its seventh year, Nintendo Switch is maintaining its momentum, experiencing strong sales, as demonstrated by the novelty's record sales at the moment," says Nintendo of Europe president Stephan Bole. "We are grateful for the support of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom from fans and look forward to seeing their adventures and creations in Hyrule," Bole continues.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In this title, players set out to explore the surface of Hyrule and the Celestial Islands that tower above it. Discover new areas, dangers, vistas and puzzles that require clever solutions. Utilize Link's new abilities and fight alongside him against malevolent forces that threaten the entire kingdom.

The Legend of Zelda is a series of action-adventure games that began more than 35 years ago (1987 to be exact) with The Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System.* Players embark on adventures with hero Link, battling adversaries and discovering mysterious secrets in vast worlds. As of March 2023, 130 million games in the franchise have been sold worldwide.

*European release. The Legend of Zelda was first released in Japan at Famicom a year earlier.
